Recently, WhatsApp updated its privacy policy to allow it to share personal data with the Facebook family of companies Users have until February 8 to read and agree to the new terms. Failure to do so would lead to WhatsApp deleting the accounts.

Privacy concerns have since emerged where many users are considering moving to other messaging platforms. A few are confused.

  • What actually are the privacy concerns?
  • What is Facebook trying to do? What does it mean to all users?
  • Are they breaking any data protection laws?

  • What are the pros and cons? What are the myths?

SPEAKERS

Kevin Shepherdson

- Fellow of Information Privacy, CIPM, CIPP/A, CIPP/E, CIPT, Exin (GDPR, Infosec), GRCP

As CEO and Founder of Straits Interactive Pte Ltd, Kevin provides and drives the vision, strategy and innovation of the company’s Data Privacy and GRC (Governance, Risk Management and Compliance) offerings that build upon the foundation of enabling trusted businesses and responsible marketing.

He is the author of “99 Privacy Breaches to Beware of” and a well-qualified consultant and trainer, achieving the Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP), awarded by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). In addition, he is a governance, risk management and compliance professional (GRCP) under the Open Compliance Ethics Group (OCEG) and an official OCEG trainer. With his background in privacy and GRC, Kevin is a leading speaker in this field and consults regularly with and for government regulators and policymakers.

Celine Chew

 - Fellow of Information Privacy, CIPM, CIPP/A, CIPT, Exin (GDPR, Infosec), GRCP

As a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and Head of Learning and Development, Celine provides insights into the behavioural change and learning required for teams to embrace change initiatives. The PDPA is one such initiative which requires businesses to learn new practices to meet compliance. Celine has extensive training experience internationally and specialises in the social, emotional and cognitive aspects of learning. She is also an executive coach to senior executives in multinational as well as regional companies.

Dr Prapanpong Khumon

Assistant Professor Khumon is Associate Dean at School of Law, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Thailand. He also acts as Advisor to Secretary-General of the Personal Data Protection Commission in Thailand. He is in the Thai Board of Trade Committee on international trade negotiation. Professor Khumon published a number of scholar articles on trade in services in ASEAN and personal data protection. He leads several research projects for the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission of Thailand (NBTC) and Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in shaping policies in media regulation, telecommunications liberalisation and personal data protection.

Lyn Boxall

 - Fellow of Information Privacy, CIPP/E, CIPP/A, CIPM

Lyn Boxall is a lawyer based in Singapore, Lyn practices as Lyn Boxall LLC, a law firm that she established in March 2015. Lyn specializes in data protection and information security and also practices general commercial law for a wide range of local and international clients. Prior to setting up her firm, Lyn worked for many years in various legal and business capacities with multinational corporations.

Lyn holds Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Law from The University of Melbourne and a Master of Laws (Intellectual Property) degree from Monash University. She is an advocate and solicitor of The Supreme Court of Singapore and a Member of the New York Bar, as well as being admitted to practice law in the State of Victoria, Australia, and in England and Wales.

Andrew Fam

- CIPT

As the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the company, Andrew drives the development of the various technology platforms that Straits Interactive offers. By leveraging innovative and cutting-edge technology, he helps the team strategise and productise Straits Interactive's end-to-end data privacy and GRC platforms to enable compliance as-a-service.

Before joining Straits Interactive, Andrew was involved in several start-ups where he built, launched and sold multiple platforms as CTO of these various pioneering companies. He is well-versed in an array of software and web programming languages and is also equipped with skills in business strategy and UI / UX. His key expertise lies in his ability to map business logic and requirements accurately and effectively into technical specifications.
