The Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL), the first piece of legislation in the Mainland dedicated to the protection of personal information, was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on 20 August 2021 and was effective from 1 November 2021. The PIPL includes among its mandates the requirement for Personal information processors that process personal information up to the threshold as prescribed by the national cyberspace authorities to appoint PIPO (personal information protection officers) who shall be responsible for supervising the personal information processing activities and the implementation of protective measures. There’s a lot to know, there’s a lot at stake and there’s a lot of opportunity for privacy professionals with the right training and education.
