Straits Interactive’s Legal Advisor, Dr Ang Peng Hwa, is a professor at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests lie in media law and policy and he has consulted on the subject for the governments of Singapore, Thailand and Bhutan. He had been involved in the work of drafting the data protection principles for Singapore back in the mid-1990s and then the early 2000s.
He is the author of ‘Ordering Chaos: Regulating the Internet’ (Thomson, 2005), a book on Internet regulation. In 2004, he was appointed by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the 40-strong Working Group on Internet Governance. Since then, he has co-founded and chaired the Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) and the Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum.
He is one of the two vice-presidents of the Consumers’ Association of Singapore (CASE), and legal advisor to the Advertising Standards Authority of Singapore (ASAS). A lawyer by training, he worked as a journalist before going on to pursue a Master’s in communication management at the University of Southern California and a Ph.D. in the mass media at Michigan State University.
